| Lu An Gua Pian originates from the district of Lu An in the Chinese province of An Hui, and without doubt this is one of the best teas of this region. As is the custom with Japanese green teas, Lu An Gua Pian is cleaned of all stalks and buds, with only the pure, emerald green tea leaves remaining. These leaves are intentionally exclusively the second leaves of the branches of the tea plant. These are seared in a pan following the harvest, and then very lightly baked on wood coal with constant turning, by which they attain their delicate smoky flavour. An interesting feature in the processing of this unusual tea is the drying process, which takes place at alternating high and low temperature. The aim is to form the shape of the leaves and create a strong, fresh, floral taste and aroma, which develops and transforms interesting over several infusions. The tea dates back to the reign of the Ching dynasty, and the first mention of it is from the year 1776. Melon seed tea from Lu An has won a range of prestigious awards, such as China Tea Award in 1982. |
